FOREST PARK, Ga. July 5, 2023 — The Forest Park Police Department is currently accepting applications for its Citizens Police Academy, an initiative that aims to provide constituents with a greater understanding of law enforcement operations and programs, including crime scene investigations, traffic stops, use-of-force tactics and E911.

Participants in the academy will meet every Tuesday evening (6 p.m. to 8 p.m.) from July 25 through Sept. 5. The comprehensive, seven-week program consists of both classroom and interactive instruction. Individuals in the academy will also receive information similar to what is used by police recruits and officers, all while gaining a first-hand perspective regarding the role of officers in their community.

"Our ultimate goal is to help bridge some of the divide that is out there when it comes to people understanding what public safety entails and how we – as public servants – go about keeping our residents safe," said Forest Park Police Chief Brandon Criss. "This forum is an excellent way for individuals to learn more about law enforcement so that they have a better understanding of our operating principles. We also want to receive valuable feedback as to how we can more effectively protect and serve."

Individuals interested in signing up for the academy must be a resident of Forest Park or Clayton County and at least 21 years of age. A standard background check will also be required; slots for the academy are limited.

To obtain an application, email Capt. Lloyd Owens at lowens@forestparkga.gov. or Sgt. Brittney Sparks at bsparks@forestparkga.gov. The deadline to submit an application is 5 p.m. Monday, July 17. For additional information, contact the Forest Park Police Department at (404) 366-4720 (option 8 on the main menu).
