Gillem Public Safety Building Groundbreaking Ceremony

Over fifty community stakeholders along with police and fire officials recently joined Forest Park Mayor, Angelyne Butler, when she announced on Monday July 26, 2021, plans for a new police precinct and fire station. The new station will replace the historic Fire Station No. 3, which was built in 1942 and once served as the fire station and telegraph exchange for Fort Gillem Military Base. Joining her to make this historic announcement were members of the City Council, Clayton County officials, Public Safety Director/Police Chief Nathaniel Clark, Deputy Fire Chief Latosha Clemons, Economic Development Director Bruce Abraham, and Planning Director James Shelby.

Prior to the Mayor leading the official turning of the dirt, details were released that this 13,206 square foot building will include a new mini-police precinct (1,559 sq. ft.) and fire station (11,647 sq. ft.). This new modern-day facility will include three apparatus bays with design layouts to better accommodate firefighters, facilities for women, a shared conference room, an exercise room, and a beautifully landscaped exterior.
Planning Director, James Shelby, is leading the effort as momentum builds in anticipation of Forest Park’s newly constructed Public Safety Building at Gillem Logistics, which is just one part of Forest Park’s $51 million Capital Improvement Projects. Other projects include renovation of the historic Starr Park and a new City Center to serve as headquarters for the city’s Police, Fire, and Municipal Government functions.
