Forest Park Police Offering Free Steering Wheel Locks For Kia Owners

Forest Park Police Department

FOREST PARK, Ga. — March 28, 2024 — In an effort to help prevent additional vehicle thefts and break-ins throughout metro Atlanta, the Forest Park Police Department has partnered with automobile manufacturer Kia to give away free steering wheel locks to city residents who own specific Kia-branded vehicles. The locks, which serve as an anti-theft tool, can be used on the following Kia models that have a physical key start system:

  • 2011-2021 Kia Optimas
  • 2011-2021 Kia Sorentos
  • 2011-2021 Kia Souls
  • 2012-2022 Kia Sportages

According to the latest data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than one million vehicles were stolen in the United States in 2022, with about half of those due to driver error. Vehicle theft is a multi-billion-dollar crime, costing vehicle owners more than $8 billion in 2022 alone. Data also continues to suggest that Kia-branded vehicles are one of the most common vehicles to be stolen due to some models not having an ignition immobilizer.

"Across the nation, car thieves are finding creative ways to steal certain vehicles and are even taking to social media to showcase how some automobiles can be stolen by simply using a screwdriver and USB cable," said Forest Park Police Chief Brandon Criss. "Along with dramatically increasing the presence of our patrol division in residential and commercial areas throughout the city, this is just another way to deter those individuals who choose to commit crimes against our constituents."

Eligible Forest Park residents interested in receiving a steering wheel lock will be required to show proof of residency, as well as their current license and vehicle registration. Steering wheel locks can be picked up Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Forest Park Police Department headquarters, located at 320 Cash Memorial Blvd. All items are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Forest Park Police Department is also encouraging individuals to practice the following vehicle theft prevention tips:

  • Park your vehicle in a well-lit area with surveillance.
  • Always close and lock all windows and doors when you park your vehicle.
  • Be sure to check your surroundings before and after you enter your vehicle.
  • Never leave valuables in your vehicle, especially if they can be seen from outside.
