What is an Advanced EMT?

AEMT Patch

An Advanced Emergency Medical Technician in an advanced life support provider with a smaller scope of practice than a paramedic. The City of Forest Park employs several of these on each shift. Their role is to provide care to sick and injured patients and assist paramedics in advanced care. Advanced Emergency Medical Technician is the preferred certification of provider for our department due to the ability to provide advanced care for our community until higher care can be provided. Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians provide safe transport and direct patient care during transport to a receiving facility. When on an ambulance the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician is responsible for the equipment on the ambulance and responding to all medical calls within the coverage area for the assigned ambulance. The ambulance crew, including the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician, is also expected to respond to fire calls and participate as a team member on a fire suppression crew. The dual roles of this provider allows for different assignments based on organizational and daily needs. An AEMT program is typically 6 months and provides a certificate.
